The Maritime Aquarium of Norwalk and 23 other leading U.S. aquariums, as members of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP), announced Friday the first steps toward achieving their long-term goal of carbon neutrality. — an announcement from the Aquarium Maritime

Fittingly on Earth Day, aquariums pledge to assess and reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases, a major cause of global warming and global climate change. “We have no choice but to take swift and drastic action on a global scale to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere if we are to enjoy the planet as we have known it for thousands of years. ‘years,” said Jason Patlis, President and CEO of The Maritime Aquarium, “and it is the responsibility of The Maritime Aquarium, as one of the nation’s premier aquariums, to give the example and to join other top aquariums in the country in embarking on a path that will lead us to a carbon neutral future.”

Within a year, with the long-term goal of achieving climate neutrality, the 24 aquariums will assess the amount of CO2 emissions created by their operations, either directly from on-site sources or indirectly from – through example – electricity, heating or air conditioning that they buy. They will also determine additional priority reductions from emission sources such as purchased goods and services, business travel, employee travel and waste disposal. By April 2024, aquariums will develop individual emission reduction plans, with timelines.
